Spa Rally Four Porsche 992 Rally GTs at the start!
Rally2 cars still make up most of the top spots in the Belgian Rally Championship, but the 2025 season also saw the arrival of an exciting new contender: the Porsche 992 Rally GT. 2024 Belgian rally champion Cédric Cherain made the most of it, winning both the Omloop van Vlaanderen and the East Belgian Rally with the new Porsche.
Excellent news for fans: four of these impressive German cars will line up at the start of the 2025 Spa Rally. Cédric Cherain will be there too, aiming for a third straight win in the second half of the season. "In Spa, we have to consider the weather," says the Liège native. "If it rains and gets muddy, the Rally2's four-wheel drive will help them. But nothing is decided yet, and with Andreas Mikkelsen now confirmed, it will be a fast rally for sure. This is the kind of challenge I love. I can't wait!"
John Wartique and Gino Bux will be at the start in a Porsche of the Luxembourg-based FS-Sport squad, and both cars even have similar liveries. After the Rallye Lëtzebuerg, the former GP3 driver is very much looking forward to what he considers his home rally and getting behind the wheel of the Porsche again. "Thanks to his experience since the start of the season, Cédric Cherain is the absolute benchmark when it comes to the 992 Rally GT," says John Wartique. “Whatever the weather conditions, his times will be the first I'll analyse. If I can steadily reduce the gap per kilometre over the course of the rally, I'll have accomplished my mission.”
Gino Bux is making a long-awaited comeback to rallying, as the last time he started a round of the Belgian Rally Championship was at the start of the season in… 2024! "The Porsche is a magnificent car," Gino adds. "The car is a hit with the public, but also with our loyal partners. Who knows, maybe this operation will lead to a sequel? I'd love for rallying to be part of my projects again in 2026. That's why my presence at Spa is so important, as it allows me to both open and close the 2025 season in style."
The fourth musketeer at the wheel of a Porsche 992 Rally GT is another local ace. After having competed with a Porsche 991 GT3 numerous times in the past, Romain Delhez is now making his debut in the latest generation of the German GT. "After the Rallye du Mont-Blanc, I was contacted by Lionel Hansen, and he suggested I test drive the car," Romain explains. “Three weeks ago, he contacted me again, and we set up a project for Spa together. I haven't had the chance to test the 992 Rally GT yet, but I already know it will be faster than the 991, especially thanks to the driver assistance features. If the weather is challenging, it won't help me get to grips with the new Porsche, but if it stays dry, it will be interesting to make a comparison with the times of Cédric, John, and Gino. Some stages are a bit more technical and therefore not really in the Porsche's favour, but the car should handle other stages very well. I'm looking forward to taking on the challenge.”
There's no doubt about it: the special stages of the 2025 Spa Rally will be packed with excitement! The battle between the Rally2 cars and the Porsches will undoubtedly be one of the highlights of the 2025 edition!
